D'oh! Crane drops $3 million yacht at Pt. Hueneme

The picture will break your heart.

Thank goodness this is not the silly little Channel Islands crane - which by the way, gets replaced this month with a new 4-ton hoist.

The crane company will buy him a new boat

The crane company will buy him a new boat, and probably rent him another one while his new replacement is built.

The boat had not been delivered. I doubt that a rental will be provided. However, somebody will have to buy him a new boat.

As someone with personal experience, insurance is a good thing.

Hmm.. well.. that kinda depends. If the crane operator's insurance pays the fare (as I would think it should), then no, it probably won't unless you happen to hold other insurance with that firm, too. But if it's on boat insurance, yeah, we're probably all stuck.

Hmmm... it's about time.

Zuma and Steve... As soon as I get over to Oxnard (hopefully
next week) I will be moving my Mac over to the Anacapa Isle
Marina. But for awhile... I will be using my slot at CIL to store
the trailer.

Since I am retired and my "time" is my own... I'm hoping that
having 24/7 accessibility will motivate me to use the boat more
often. And yes... there is a liveaboard limitation for anything
under 35 feet at the aforementioned marina... but I think that
won't be a problem for me at least.

There is always the Casa Sirena Hotel... near my slip. (smile)

Best regards to all

I was a crane operator at the Port of Milwaukee for 23 years.
I put a few dents in a new Mercedes once.
The old steam winches were kind of fun, some of the time.

Of course it's a shame it happened, I can imagine the recipient's groan when he/she heard the news, and it's good no one was injured but the good news is it was a power boat, not a sail boat. :-)

Hmm.. well, if it were me and I'd spent a year or more working with a yacht designer and had put hudreds of thousands of dollars into that baby, I'd probably be *at* the dock watching them take it off. So.. maybe the owner actually saw this happen in front of him?

(Oh, and if I'd seen that crane operater drop my boat, with all the time, money and heart I had invested in it... I would have executed him on the spot. )

IIRC, Port Hueneme was an intermediate drop point on the transit to Long Beach or ....? The guy who can afford that boat is likely too busy to follow it's shipping progress. He's either working to pay for it, or he's waiting in some exotic location to be informed that it has been fully commissioned. After it arrived at his home port, wonder how long had been scheduled for commissioning? Bet it was measured in weeks.

I'm reminded of a newscast about ten years ago where a man, his young son, and a TV reporter are on a beach during El Nino and his home has just been totally destroyed and is floting in the ocean and the female reporter says to him "This must just be devastating for you - - - what are your feelings now?" - - - and he replies "Oh, it will be OK, I've still got my wallet."

Rick :) :macm:
