Best posts?

Post by mgladstonez »

Hello everyone, I just signed up on this forum this week.

Forgive me for my laziness, but I was hoping you could point me to any posts that I should check out first, so I can get up to speed here?

Many thanks, Mike

Mine!!!
Welcome to the forum.
No really, What is your interest?

A little about yourself and your boat and what you want to do with it would help.

Oh, my. There are so many "good ones". These subjects have been beaten to death and thus provide hours of reading enjoyment.
Practice using the "search" feature. (check "search for all terms!)

Search: "prefer 26X 26M" ; which boat is better, 26x or 26M.
Search: "26x planing speed" ; will either really plane?
Search: "outboard prop size" ; myriad prop choices.
Search: "air conditioner" ; the trouble folks go to to complicate a simple sailboat.

Others popular topics discuss forestay tension, centerboard issues, dual axle trailers, battery and wiring, hot showers, larger outboards, and more recently whether or not we'll blow ourselves up making breakfast.

Cheers!

Mike, if you like MacGregor Sailboats, this site is really great. Nearly all posts are helpful. The "PUB" is sorta like chat stuff, but lots of fun and interesting too.

Ive found stuff regarding the Mac unusually helpful & informative, and issues of boat safety are excellent. Bilge pumps, electrical, engine care, ballast, sail care, etc., and on and on and on. All great stuff !

What is your MacGregor status :?: Got one, getting one, or just thinking about one :?:

Happy Sailing

let's not forget... Apparently Blue is faster, steering cables, Best BBQ, boat stability, Cutter rigs, oversized engines, undersized engines, weighting the centerboard, powering at 26 mph (?), single handing, double handing, no handing, how to make the wife happy, who's the best dealer (bill), and finally... who is the worst sailor and why am I ?

Enjoy the Boards.... I sure do

Welcome Aboard, Mike!

Interesting first post -- but I bet others just haven't asked. I can make some general suggestions. If you've browsed many other discussion sites, you may recoginize Heath's PHPbb software, used by many other website administrators. If you're active on other sites, then some of my following suggestions may be redundant.
  • 1. Check out Website Notices by Heath Johnson, owner/administrator of the website. Please take a special minute read Heath's notice about New User Postings, and understand probationary posting. You'll also see Policies, How-tos, and more.

    2. The Search button and your Private Messages (PM) mailbox are at top center of every page.

    3. You can browse everywhere as a guest, but you must log-in to join discussions. An advantage of logging in ... the Forum will keep track of which new posts you haven't yet read. At bottom-left of the main discussion page, right under your name/avatar, you'll see a small link called "View Posts since last visit." It performs a search on all Fora, serving a list of posts you haven't seen.

    4. Don't forget to browse the page-left Buttons. Many users overlook some great resources there, including Exploring stories and Featured Articles, plus of course the Mods pages, Classifieds and Catalog. There's also a button for Heath's own Mac 26X story.

    5. After you've dialed into the posting process you'll want to occasionally add some formatting or pictures. At bottom left of every Edit box (where you type your post) see the link for BBCode. It's a tutorial on these special posting features.

    6. If you use a tabbed browser (Opera or Firefox) you can open the tutorial in a separate tab. Otherwise, paint your section of interest & copy, then paste into your edit box, for reference while entering your post. Also, a very handy way to scan the website ... open the "New posts" list in your first tab, then launch 3 or 4 threads into background tabs. You can cycle through them, read and delete, while your main list remains in the first tab.

    7. You can edit any of your own posts. Look now at your OP (original post) to see that, in addition to the normal Quote button you also have an Edit Button - permits you to correct and amplify a post. If someone has posted after you, then your edit will be time-stamped, otherwise not.

    8. All of the earlier browsing suggestions were great. But it's also fun to just open any forum, like Events, and scroll old threads for interesting titles. Of course the main Powersailor forum has the longest archive, general purpose discussions.

    9. The Pub is available for any sort of topic, and we prefer "non-sailing" topics to go exclusively into the Pub. Therefore, a non-sailing topic entered elsewhere will probably be moved to the Pub by a Moderator. The Pub is the only forum where threads are auto-purged after a limited lifetime. Otherwise, all threads go into a permanent archive.

    10. Finally, Heath has the "signature field" disabled to save real estate on our display screens. However, most users have added info on their boat & outboard into the Location field, just after City-State. It provides important context, right under your name, so everyone can better understand your questions and comments. It's even a good idea to just enter "Still looking for a Mac!"
So there ya go - my Top Ten Hints for using the Mac forum.
Hope it helps a bit - enjoy!~!

Clearly must be originally from Minnesota, where the women are strong, the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.

Frank, great points. You should add them as part of a guide or
faq section to this site. If I knew all that starting out, would have saved me hours of messing around.

Actually from Hawaii where the men have the habit of forming very high opinions of themselves, sometimes also held by others, sometimes not so much.
