75 E-tch
Took out the boat on sunday with the new 75 on it. some things i noticed. it was not as smooth as my old suzuki and a little louder. but it sure jumps up on plane FAST! tops out at a strong 24mph (Ihave bottom paint) the bigger prop is much nicer around the dock and the flush port on the back make it a dream to flush when back at the slip. Also the charging system charged both batts up after 20 min (1 was dead 2 almost dead) I think I am going to like it!
PS I will be selling my 2002 suzuki DF 50 with the blown head cheap if someone needs a good lower end.

Well, I'm considering the Suzuki- Etec swap myself so I am THRILLED to talk to someone who has already done it. Here are my questions:
1) Noise: you mentioned it was slightly noisier. I particularly liked how quiet my Suz was at 1000 RPM's or slightly above. You couldn't even hear i and cockpit conversations were not drowned out. How would you rate noise at the low end vs a Suz? At the high end of RPM's I don't really care cuz you can't hear anything anyway. Was your noise difference perhaps due to the fact you went from a 50 to a 75?
2) Smell? Anything drift back into th cockpit compared to the Suzuki? Any last trace of that oil mixing smell?
3) Weight on the transom: Did you notice your boat not being so 'nose high"? Or did the Suz 50 and Etec 75 weight about the same.
4) Anybody hearing anything about maintenance issues with Etecs? I HAVE heard a few grumblings out there, but can never get the specifics
Noise is my big issue but I would love to get some weight off the transom that my 4 stroke has.

Let’s see if I can answer some questions,
Herndon, I bought the motor off EBay from a company called tradition pontoon. They had a bunch of motors that are 2006 that they wanted to get rid of before winter. I paid 5300+250 to ship. When it arrived it was on a shipping pallet and packed nicely. I had a local dealer install it (Antioch marine) for about 1200. So I am into it 6700$. If you are in the bay area Pete of Antioch marine did an outstanding job and was a joy to work with. If you are looking at a buying a motor, now is the time with the 7 year warranty.
Beene, I got the 14x11 prop I get right at 5100 rpm with no ballast 3 people on board and bottom paint, 24 mph on my gps. No wedge. I had the installer put in alum plates (just like some of the pictures here). The e-tec is 320Lbs the suz DF50 is 243Lbs. The suz DF70 is 359Lbs
Decam, Noise. Well when the suz was at idle I couldn’t tell it was on. The e-tch I can just barely hear it. I t doesn’t bother me at all. The admiral couldn’t tell the difference at any speed. We held conversations and didn’t have to yell. I like to hear a little motor noise so I can tell what is happening. Just like I like a little exhaust sound from my car. Smell I could smell it once for a second and said to my wife “Smell that?” and she said “what smell?” so maybe it was me. But the e-tec can be programmed to run 100to1 with special oil. But I didn’t have my dealer do that, maybe later this season. The boat is a little higher in the front now but I will correct this by carrying 12 gals of gas instead of 18 (changing from the pain in the ass 9 gall tanks to easier to handle 6 gal tanks).
The e-tec 75 is lighter than the 70 Suzuki by 40 pounds also if you can pony up the extra $ you can go with the 90 at the same weight. Now the e-tch has a 75 amp alternator the suz is 25 and now with the 7 year warranty it has a better warranty. The bigger prop is so nice at the dock and boy the thing just jumps on plane!!!! So cool!!!

Honda just introduced a completely new 4 stroke fuel injected 75hp / 90 hp family. They say it is the same motor used in the Honda Fit car. Each weighs in at 359 lbs, the same as the Suzuki 60/70 family. These are the lightest four strokes yet. The Suzuki 90/115/140 family weighs 416 lbs (410 for 140).

They have a 44 amp alternator that provides 35 amps to the battery.
Now you can have a 90 hp four stroke for the same weight of the Suzuki 70 hp.

30 pounds over the e-tec, less batt charging. but Honda stands behind the motor for a "TRUE" 5 years! (Suzuki warr sucks they lie!!!!) If i was looking i would check this out! I like the motor flushing of the e-tec no need to run the motor and you just hook up a hose to the motor and flush, also no maint for 3 years. the Honda needs oil changes but the cost of an oil change is the same as a gal of 2 stroke oil. if the honda has a flush port like the e-tec, then i would look at it as an option, and if the cost of the honda is cheaper, than i think it would be a top choice.

I would consider myself an ardent supporter of E-tec technology...and am plannning on getting a larger one.
But some things still are hype and hope.
You will be much happier and see much less service on the average engine, if you break in the E-tec, (even with its patented aerospace designed cylinders and materials), like any other outboard with gradual power demands in the first 10 hours.

Sounds like you got a great deal Rich. I paid something like $7k installed from the dealer, and that's an etec 50.... 2+ years ago. Can't figure out the deal with the prop. I spin a 14x13 on my 50 and you're spinning a 14x11 on a 75. Maybe it has someting to do with gear ration. I am just below the optimum RPM, but with a 13.25 x 13 prop, I get the optimum RPM but lower speed. Went back to the 14x13.
