I may be taking a job in Singapore soon and was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding costs, packing and general issues to ship a 26X by container.

I would likely be there for 6 months before deciding if it is worth bringing it over.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ultimately I will check with Macgregor to see how they do it and the fees involved, since they no doubt have the lowest cost method figured out.

I just thought I would check here first. A few years ago I checked with a freight forwarder/logistics outfit our company used and their fee was more than the cost of the new boat. Not the right company for little shipments I guess. I used them once to send a 100 lb box of parts to Brazil on an emergency-expedited basis and it took them almost 3 months to get the box delivered, even with my daily calls to expedite. Plus they charged about a grand for this great service. Not the company I would deal with again.

In 1994 I looked in to shipping a car from San Francisco to Rotterdam, NL. I got 3 quotes, $900, $1100, $1200. I was happily suprised. I never did actually ship it though.

I haven't been there yet, but spoke w/ a seat-mate on recent flight. His opinion was that Singapore is so small, you'll quickly run out of interesting diversions. Sounds like your Mac would be sorely missed!

Macgregor factory might be a really good option. They may have the same problem that you have . . . only needing one boat to make that transit. Let your Mac sit in their yard for six months or so, and they might do the whole deal, two-boat container, at best possible pricing. (just a thought).

That would be my first thought if I was out west. But I'm in NJ at the moment so the cost to get it to California would exceed any savings I would think.

I think the new job will have a lot of travel so the boat might not get used much even if I find a way to get it over there. I also don't know if there are any customs contraints. Some countries will either forbid a used boat being imported or impose tariffs that make it impractical. Lots of things that need to be checked first.

Yep, in a container. But that was 10 years ago, and it was a 1967 Mustang, so somewhat smaller than an X boat.

Good grief, my first car was an old 1967 mustang. 289 ran like a wild thing. But it would have been more efficient to walk. I spent more hours fixing things on that car than you would believe. Rebuilt fenders, replaced virtually every mechanical part on the car, repainted several times, then the unibody psuedo frame broke in half. Doors would freeze shut in the winter. I don't know why, but I loved that car (probably because I built most of it) . Ahh the memories.

Not gonna sell my baby. Just got it the way I want it. If I can get it moved for around $1500-2000, why not? Otherwise I will just store it.

Yeah, if you have a place, do that. Secure enough to take the insurance off the thing. It's like the 54 MG TD. Maintained, it is an investment.
