Merc Big Foot
Upgrading my 1998 26x to the Merc Bigfoot 50, can anyone tell me the model# for the control box? In the Mercury catalog there are serveral to choose from.
Does that control box include the ignition key? Currently with my Tohatsu 50's, the key is inserted on the control box.
Can anyone provide model# for the optimum propeller? I can see from previous post's that it should be a 14".
thanks for the help!

I have a 2003 BF 50 on my
, I had a quick look on my receipt and manual but dont have a part number for the throttle. The key does come separate on my unit, I also opted for the keyless upgrade (punch in code to start)
I started with the 14 inch x 10 pitch 3 blade Al prop which was fine - I changed last season to a 14 x 3x11 prop since I 'never' use WOT and enjoy lower rpm for given speed with that prop. I typically crew 3 (total of 4 on boat, equivalent of 3 adults) plus cruising gear.
If its not too late, go up to the BF 60 - same engine and weight..

I bought a new (left over)merc 50 4-stroke bigfoot ,I ordered controls ,cables and installed it myself, with some advice from members of this board.
some recommended piecing controls cables and ignition and alarms. I bought the merc controls and cables, it saved money and headaches. the merc
smc4000 controls are designed for the merc outboard. It has it all in one unit , control, trim and tilt
alarms and ignition, use 14 ft quicksilver cables.
It went together quick and easy and is flawless in operation. here is a link to the thread giving more detail and info

merc big foot
Thanks for all the responses. Tom, when you decided to install yourself, does that have any affect on the Manufactures's warranty?
Luke
The dealer I bought from was selling some left over outboards on ebay. He was an authorized dealer and registered my waranty with merc., as they usually do even though he did not do the install. Before
I found that deal I had contacted two other merc dealers that would sell at a discounted price but would only ship to another authorized dealer to install. I assume mercury has made that a requirement.
The merc control I recommended smc 4000 ,has the wiring harness included , wired to control and wires for tach, a plug at the engine end plugs right into the wire harness on the motor.
I don't know where you are in your new motor process
but I love my big foot , the solas 14X 11 has the big dog ear blades and is probably the cheapest Prop

the Key is in the Merc throtal.
I use a 14 X 10 SS prop and have done well with it. If you are motoring with stumps, I would not advice it. SS props are the norm here in FL.
The rubber insert with the Big foot helps in shifting from Foward to reverse.
Nice set up.
If you want to put in the Raymarine S1 autopilot, make sure you have enough room for the throtal and autopilot motor.
