Project M - Five Second Dinette

Post by Currie »

Hello all,

Not to keep doing this ad-nauseum, but it's fun - plus now I'm 95% sure I'm looking for a 2003/2004 26M. I imagine someone has thought along these lines before, but I wanted to work it out and do some designs.

Since the 03/04 model doesn't have a permanent dinette, I've been struggling to come up with an idea that doesn't mean struggling with a removable table.

This one folds up into the galley around the daggerboard chute. I did some measurements from the factory drawings and it looks like everything works out ok, although the table is shorter than the factory one - only about 30", or slightly less, in length, but that's alright for me and how I would use it.

The only trouble I see is having to either cut a slot thru the galley top (as shown), or make a heavy-duty bracket that wraps around it - to the hinge underneath. The pics explain the rest. It should be quite sturdy, as it is supported at four points (there's a small bracket on the galley that you can't see). The flaps can lift up on either side (with inset hinges), and fold completely over, for walking through to the head, or cooking at the galley. They snap in, with a button-in-socket type deal. Also, the support leg will probably have a pin at the bottom to hold it in place when deployed. I haven't bothered to draw any buckles and clasps to hold everything in place, but they would be there.

I think the table in the first pic is drawn a little long, but it shows the idea.

I enjoy challenging woodworking projects, so I'd be ok with the construction, but without a boat yet :P anyone see any reason this wouldn't work? So far I've only checked the dimensions against the factory drawings. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Cheers,
~ Bob

Wonderful idea, Bob!

The only change I'd make is to not make those little 'ears' at the back end of the table - I'd make it straight across. The ears will make it more difficult to slide around the end of the table on the port side, going forward.

Thanks Kevin,

The little ears may amount to nothing at all, all the way up to a couple of inches. I can't be sure without a real boat. They do block the way completely, however, since they provide a vital bearing point for sturdiness. To walk forward, one would lift the leaf, then walk thru. It's very possible the table would be straight and just the corner would rest on the settee arm-rest/cabinet. It would come down to the final ergonomics :)

Cheers, and thanks again

Hehe,

Ugh...I actually drew the final pic with the wrong design :? :P The second pic shows that the leaves and supports will jam on the leg when you try to drop them. The right way to do it is not that different so I won't bother to post a new one. It's just an extra notch that gets covered up by that "keeper" trim piece.

On Edit: The mistake was driving me nuts :P I fixed it.

very nice! I can see that working very well on the 26 classic daggerboard boats.

Thanks guys!

JJ - only requirement is that you post pics when it's done :-)

Jack - great job! I love the flat screen display. I've been wondering where I might put one myself. Thanks for posting the pics.

Very handsome concept . You really are an excellent illustrator. I applaud what I 've seen. The problem I have had with my '04 M galley isn't removing the dinette table, as much as wanting a smaller "Prep" area? I've been toying with the idea of a fold down smaller cutting board attached to the starboard section above the seat cushions. The cushions might get stained but you'd have a place to stand. The original design doesn't have a support leg, allowing you to slide in and out easily.

Here was my (somewhat more basic) solution

It is a 2 piece design, and it doubles as a table for the cockpit as well

Very nice mod Paul - and smart to make it double as a cockpit table. Thanks!
