Foredeck Bag Size??

Post by Bawgy »

What size bag do I need for the Foredeck . I want to store my sail in one while we are camping on the boat . I have the Jib and the Genoa so I guess I need one big enough for the Genoa. I see them mostly listed in Three(3) sizes but dont know which size would be appropriate. Someone out there who has one or knows which size to get???

Even the genoa on a mac is a small sail compared to sails on most boats. I would guess the smallest would be just fine. The mac sails fold down to nearly nothing.

SailBag

Post by Terry »

A sailbag is something I have contemplated also since I have hank-on headsails. All three Mac sails fold up small enough to fit in very similar sized bags for stowing, the bags come with the sails. If the sailbag you are thinking of is the same one I am thinking of (foredeck bag) then they need to be a bit larger. I am thinking a heavier one than the factory bag, perhaps made of sumbrella with a zipper to zip around the forestay as I plan to leave the sail hanked on to the forestay and just tuck the lines inside the bag (not sure how the lines will stow yet). I will leave the down haul in place and maybe the halyard attached too. Perhaps a medium sized bag would accommodate either Mac headsail, not sure yet but I'd rather be too large than too small. Perhaps one of those sail supply places like the sailwarehouse has them. Try;

The Mac 150 Genoa is 206 sq/ft so that would seem to say the F3 size in your link would work.

I see that the SailRite bag is $48, sew it yourself, a pretty good deal.

If you're a dedicated "shopper" you might find one on eBay for that price. The eBay seller named Comboat has sometimes offered surplus bags from West Marine, says they retailed at $175, just guessing that his reserve is pretty close to $50. He also sells other canvas, sailcovers, winch covers, sheet bags, etc. Located in central PA, it could be stuff made by the Amish ??

Here's a link to Jib Bags on eBay, showing only the recently closed listings. The second listing was Comboat's sale at $46, plus shipping. Don't be shy about sending him an email with your direct offer (say, $50, delivered.) Many listings expired for not meeting the reserve price ...

Never used one, but it makes no sense to me that you have to fold sails to put them in a foredeck bag. Seems to me like the bag has to be big enough to stuff the sail into the bag, and that means it must be somewhat larger.

Thanks to Franks post I went to the site and asked directly for the sale it now price . Comboat I think it was I saved it at home . I will probably order it tonight . It was 38.95 and 5.95 S&H. I will spend the rest of today making sure I will order the right size . I also think that the F3 size would be appropriate

I use a comperable West Marine Bag. It works great, and best of all is trouble free, and bulletproof.
