PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

Post by sailpsych »

Does anyone know if there is a periodic maintenance schedule (PMS) available for the 26x? After using such a system in the service for 20+ years, I've come to appreciate regular preventive maintenance. Although, there are those of a mind that, "If it ain't broke...don't mess with it" I've found that it is better to break it in port under controlled circumstances than out to sea where there simplay "ain't no hep" available.

Regards,

Bruce

I would think the motor and the winches need maintenance every year at least.

The trailer looks like it will need a lot of TLC. Maintain the brakes, wiring, bearings, bunks, tires, etc

Every spring we change the lower unit oil, change the sparkplugs, check the fuel filter on the outboard. On the trailer I have the bearings packed and the brakes checked. After every trip I grease the bearing buddies.

Apart from motor maintenance, I was also thinking about periodic inspections of:
stays
CB line
CB
inspecting the mast for cracking
cleaning rust off of stays
greasing the trailer bearings
inspecting trailer for cracks
refilling and or replacing trailer brake fluid
inspecting halyards for excessive wear
maintenance on cam cleats
washing/waxing hull
inspecting ballast tank for leaks
retorquing screws on windows, cleats, or other locations
readjusting the stays for correct tension
Inspecting chain plates for cracking of fiberglass
oiling hinges
inspecting eletrical system for worn or cracked insulation on wires
ensuring all lights work

I guess I'm turning it into a maintenance project overall, but still love mucking around on the boat.

Some items would need to be inspected no more than annually while others might need an inspection prior to every underway. Some may need inspecting while underway while others only weekly, monthly, or quarterly.

Thoughts?

Does anyone service the winches here? I have been told by several people that the winches need service at least once a year.

Does anyone do it? Have it done? Not do it at all?

I will be be servicing my winch tommorrow. It does not rotate as easy as newer ones.
My 26x is a 95 and I am sure it has never been done. The upper bearings in my jib and
center board cam cleats has fractured and hindered the cam cleats ability to uncleat easily.

To all that I would add that the water pump in the outboard should be replaced at least every other year, I have a Nissan and it is recommended to replace it that often, I replace it every year, cheap insurance.........

Psych, you need a psych! I was a Auto, Diesel, Power generator Mech RA for 6 years. Got awful tired of PM's (preventative and periodic) That could be an addition to this thread!!http://macgregorsailors.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=811 Of course as usual Im only teasing. We go over our boat stem to stern every year and refurb as neccesary just not with a list. I do a thorough inspect prior to every sail also.

OK I lied. We have a copy of this laminated on our boat. We dont use it anymore because we have our routine down. I copied it from somewhere and modified it to suit us on a Mac. Just copy/paste it and edit in Word to suit your liking. As for year end, I just start at the bow and work to the transom.

Scott,
That is exactly what I was looking for. I'm pretty sure that covers just about everything there is. Of course, once you do it a couple of times, you get to know the boat and what needs to be checked more often.

Thanks again,

Bruce
