Trailer licence in Ontario
I am the new owner of a 26M and trailer (2005) purchased in the U.S.
My challenge is getting the Ontario MTO to issue plates. They say I need a letter confirming the trailer conforms to the regulations here. Has anyone had a similar problem? Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Barry

Probably got the boat I was looking for...
Barry,
Looks like you scooped up exactly the boat I am beginning to look for. I'm not sure about your trailer issue but I have an Inlaw that routinely imports fishing boats from the US so I'll ask him. You may have to get a simple safety done at a local garage.
On another note I'm curious however on what your pulling the "26" with and how it handles? I've got a new Toyota with tons of HP & torque but braking might be an issue.
Might see you around beautiful Ajax..although you'd best get a hitch lock in case I take a shine to your boat
Smooth sailing....JR

Thanks, JR, for the advice and offer to help.
I pulled her from Minneapolis to Ajax with a Land Rover Discovery with a 4.0L V8. I think I will soon trade up to a Chevrolet Silverado pick up with either a 4.8L or 5.3L as the Discovery is 12 years old and was struggling at times. Braking was never an issue, but swaying at highway speeds had me concerned a few times.
I'll remember to keep the trailer locked.

I bought my M from Bill in the US. New 2007. What I needed for plates, and that was the only hassle BTW, was:
- the customs form showing that I brought it over here and the est value of said trailer including what the odometer reading was.
- RIV sent me a form to be completed by Canadian Tire for free
- Canadian Tire sends info to RIV
- RIV wanted 170 bucks for whatever.... just cuz....
Bring all that with you and that should do it.
Later, RIV sent me a sticker that had to be put on the trailer.
Cheers

To G:
Thanks for the advice.
I have the customs form.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is "RIV"?
I'll try the Candian Tire tomorrow.
Cheers,

Frank;
Thanks for the hint about the tongue weight.
The main reason for trading up is the Discovery is getting tired and finds the overall weight too much.
What do most people use for hauling?

I believe that you will also need a letter from Macgregor stating that the trailer has not been recalled for any factory defects.
I am a Canadian living in the US and will likely return to Canada at some time in the future. I also bought my boat from Bill at Boats 4 Sail (2007M)and he made sure that I had the letter.
By the time I do this I may even need a new letter?

You'll need a Trailer Recall Statement from MacGregor, that says "As of the above date there have been no recall orders for any trailers manufactured by MacGregor Yacht Corporation."
Contact the dealer the boat was originally purchased from, or contact MacGregor directly.
There is also a sticker on the forward port side of the trailer that they want to see. When Calin tried to register his trailer they initially missed that.
Derrick may need one with a more current date when he goes back. I'll get him one.
