trailer ball
trailer ball
I just bought a new truck and I have to put a new hitch and ball on it. I cannot remember what size ball goes with the trailer. I have a trailer for the 2001X. Does anyone know what size ball fits?
Thanks

trailer ball
I talked to the dealer and I had asked them about the harness and hitch. I told him that I have surge brakes on my trailer and I thought that all you needed to do was hook up the harness and plug it into the trailer and your good to go. But he was saying that you also need some kind of electric trailer brake hook up for the brakes to work. I guess that includes some kind of device that goes inot the car to work the brakes besides the harness. I am a little confused as to what this is, and if I really need that. On my other car I just had a harness added and I just pluged it into the trailer and I thought that took care of everything. Have I been driving around without my surge brakes really working? Do I need this extra part or do I just need the harness. I'm pretty confused at this point and not sure what I need. Your help will be greatly apprecaited.
Thanks

Nope, you don't need electric brakes hookup if you're using the stock Mac trailer... the surge brakes are sufficient.
As for the ball, yes, it's 2", but I suggest that once you've fitted it that you also drill and pin it... described here... saves the risk of it becoming loose and causing a whole host of not-too-fun things to happen, usually in rapid succession and behind you... and ultimately costing a lot more than the $0.05 cotter pin...

The electric hook up as he said is just to bypass the brakes when backing up. The electric connection is attached to the back up light circuit . When you put your tow vehichle in reverse and the back up lights come on the surge brake is disabled . once you put the car in any other gear the surge brakes are active again . If you do not have a 5 wire plug any dealer on this board can get you one. You can also get a metal key to put in the slot the surge brake housing has to keep it from applying brakes when backing against resistance Search towing thread on Backing up

Man, I'd love to... sadly, though, the kids are back in school which means swim practices, homework, Scouts, etc... not to mention my own work... sigh... life is what happens when you're not paying attention.Bawgy wrote:Kmclemore

At least she didn't say "Hopefully, a lot bigger than my husband's?!"baldbaby2000 wrote:Reminds me of when a friend of mine sent his wife into the hardware store to pick up a trailer hitch ball. She went up to one of the guys and said she needed to talk to someone about 2" steel balls. It took him a minute to realize what she was talking about and then asked her what size shank!
Reminds me of the time when my jr. high school buddy and I went into the phrm-xd to buy condoms - as a prank we were going to use them as balloons for the upcoming pep rally - and back in those days you had to ask the pharmacist for them, they weren't on display as they are today. So, my buddy lost the coin-toss and had to go ask for them while I browsed through the greeting cards. He goes up to the pharmacist and whispers "I'd like a box of Trojans, please" to which the pharmacist replies "Sure.. what size?" and my brilliant buddy loudly replies "I dunno.. as big as you got'em, I guess!". The pharmacist, stifling a laugh says "No... I mean... do you want the box of 6 or the box of 12?"

Thanks for the info. That did clear up some things I wasn't sure of.
Like always, the help on this board is greattttttt.
You guy got back to me before my dealer did. I doubt I will hear from him for a few more days. I knew I could count on you.
thanks again
