Boat Balls

Post by FLembo18 »

Hello Mates,

I was wondering if anyone has viewed the You Tube Video "Boat Balls".... it's outstanding. Just go to Google and type in (You Tube Boat Balls) the video is close to 5 minutes long. It shows an 85' rig going under a 65' bridge on the intercoastal waterway..... ENJOY !!! ENJOY !!!

WOW, that's cool,
I'd be practicing that ALOT before I tried it "against" the bridge. Any guesses as to what the $$$ damage would be to a boat like that if he didn't clear the bridge?

Wow, it scares me when I've got 20 ft of clearance because its so hard to judge.

BTW, there are a bunch of other cool sailing vids I just watched.

Several years ago I did a few trips on the110ft topsail schooner "Nathaniel Bowditch"in Maine. The captain of the Bowditch used to take it under the Eggemoggin Reach Bridge by heeling the boat ,running close to the constant SW wind. He could only do it at dead low, when the wind was right, and it was amazing to watch.

Funny, when I was at the helm of the Bowditch,he never let me do that! :D

If you know the dimentions of your boat it would not be too hard to figure out the mast height when healed over till the rail was at the water line. I did a quick sketch to see how much you could gain. In my sketch you still would not be able to pass under a 65' bridge. My geometry my not be quite right but you get the point.

Thanks Pete

Mi bridge is 7.2

It is the lowest point in the water way...

http://www.douro.iptm.pt/EN/via_navegav ... ticas.aspx

Ferradosa Bridge 7.2 mt.

What is the hight of a Mac 26X to water level?

9mt???

This could be interesting to me, because big boats move along the waterway making 1mt (3ft) waves. If I am maneuvering the mast up or down it is really bad in narrow points of the river ...

nice trick, not necessary if your Mac has a mast-raising gin-pole, babystays, and rig to partially lower the mast backwards underway.
