Purchasing equipment from the USA
I am looking to maybe purchase some equipment & possibly a new spinnaker from either Blue Water or some of the companies in the States & ship back to the United Kingdom, has anyone else from the UK went down this route & are there any shipping taxes to pay at the UK side.
Who do the US guys recommend for purchasing a new Spinnaker ?

Re: Purchasing equipment from the USA
Check out HALSEY LIDGARD U.K. for quality sails....If they are as good there as produced by the Fremantle , Western Australia] sail loft, you will not be disappointed. Sadly, the sails supplied to
's are rubbish in comparison...made in Brazil and tear too easily. And that is info from the Fremantle office of DOYLE themselves...who repaired my [ previous] DOYLE mainsail. Truth hurts, Roger... Would you sell me just the
hull and let me add the other stuff.

Re: Purchasing equipment from the USA
I happen to like my Kelly-Hanson spinnaker. It seems like a good cut and good material. They are not stitched, though - they're put together with a super-strong adhesive tape. (I believe they aren't alone in using this material. SailRite sells it for the same purpose, and it is evidently formulated for the job.)
Unfortunately, they had a bad batch of spinnakers last winter - and I got one of them. It wasn't much damage; part of one seam "popped open". When I sent K-H an e-mail asking about it, they sent me a brand-new spinnaker - and "no, don't send the old one back."
Kelly-Hanson stands behind their products.

Hi There.
Just to let you know, i recently ordered some bits for my 26s from the states, i checked the cost of shipping with the company "DOOR TO DOOR" the cost of shipping was more expensive than the parts $308, which i paid, 6 weeks after i paid and received the goods Fedex are now demanding another $100 for "OTHER COSTS" which i am refusing to pay....all i can say is be carefull and keep all of the emails and documentation or your purchases and shipping.
Hope you have better luck than me.

Why not look at Kelly Hansen sails, etc. I purchased a new mainsail, chradle cover and lazy jack system at an overall cost of about US$1,500, postage included. Service was good.

Reminds me of the persistent rumor that FedEx and UPS are going to merge ... and call themselves "FedUP!"madguy wrote:6 weeks after i paid and received the goods Fedex are now demanding another $100 for "OTHER COSTS" which i am refusing to pay....
International shipping costs are ridiculous - but, with everything going air-freight and the price of jet fuel still ghastly, it seems we're stuck with it unless we can find a good freight-forwarding service. And then ... what about Customs duties?
Example: I was preparing to ship a "ShopVac" wet-dry vacuum cleaner from the USA to my nephew in Brazil. The one I wanted to send him cost $50 in the store, and UPS wanted $600 to ship it to his door! (Instead, I found one small enough to go via the U.S. Postal Service's International Priority Mail. Paid $30 for the unit, and $50 to get it to him.)

Some good points gentleman,
will look at a few of the companies involved & see what the company offers for shipping. Now I have to figure to go for a cruising chute or spinnaker.

robbie
ive bought lots of equipment from KHanson, great service and great quality sails.
so far ive bough a Spin,Sock,Mainsail,Jib,Ridgid boom vang.I did not want the OEM doyle sails so i went for the mid range sail from KH.
Ive also bought stuff from West marine, sailrite and gerhauer.
The shipping and taxes add up,its better if you can get it all in one hit as the shipping is a little cheaper. When the stuff arrives,a letter from the shipping co lets you know that its here and then you have to pay the tax before its delivered.
