Adventures in Trailering

Post by KayakDan »

I hauled a load of our stuff to Ohio over New Years weekend, towing a 12ft U-haul trailer with our Dodge Ram,both loaded to the max. All the way to our first night destination with no problems. In the morning we plugged our new home address into the GPS,and off we go.
The GPS clearly can't decide which is the most sensible, even if it is the shortest. We got on some snowy backcountry roller coasters that were nasty, and we were unable to back out or turn around. I expected the GPS to give the next directions as" Turn right at the cow, then left at the tree".
Then there was the hill...short but steep and it banks hard to the left.Crap! I gave it a slow steady accelerate and we made it almost...just almost to the top. Then we slid down the hill,a horrible slow ballet with the truck sliding to the left and the trailer coming around to say hello to the right side of the truck. Amazingly, the trailer only tapped the rear quarter, not even scratching the paint. As we sat in the truck quietly assessing the situation,I ask her"tell me again why we're doing this??" We both chuckle(what else can you do?)and I send her up the hill to fend off anyone crazy enough to be going the other way. Now.. how to get out of this. I found that the brake mechanism on the trailer slid under the bumper and now the two are stuck together. What luck-being in Ohio, the house across the street has a big ol' tractor, and the young woman there is happy to assist. Well after a few minor things like getting the tractor stuck in a ditch,we get everything sorted out. Nothing that a little planning,a crowbar,100ft of chain and a hydraulic jack, and a tractor couldn't solve. Off we go-in the other direction!
All in all,we were lucky, and someday we'll look back on this and laugh...maybe... :D

Always important to set the GPS to "Avoid Minor Roads", unless you want to take the senic route. Glad you got it sorted out safely.

There were two different families in OR this past December whose GPS's led them to back park type very unused roads where they both got snowed in and were very lucky to be rescued.

One family was rescured by a brilliant family member who got the same GPS they were usuing and retraced the route it gave. After going several miles onthe Park road they decided "they couldn't have gone this far" - - - and just then they found the missing family's tracks.

The other family walked out until they finally got a cell signal.

Not just country roads you have to watch out for sadly.

The port of Brisbane is expanding by building rock walls then back-filling with sand etc. to create more usable land for the shipping terminal. At night it is easy to get confused with all the city lights in the background so a GPS can be invaluable, but local knowledge and a good paper chart are still required when planning trips. That's why almost all GPSs have a warning when you turn them on that they are to be used for planning only not navigation. But how many of us these day rely exclusively on our chartplotters?

Even experienced sailors have to be reminded of this from time to time.

True..everything North and West of Albany should be considered a different state, just like the Berkshires shouldn't be considered MA...

I stopped by the OH license bureau on Friday, but they were closed early for New Years . The woman there still took the time to answer our new to OH questions in a friendly fashion. Try that at the RMV in Boston,or NYC! :D

Captain Jim,thanks for the welcome! Go Bucks!

I still get that warm and cosy feeling in Buffalo NY - even when 7 feet of snow has hit...all the times my old cars would break down, I never waited more than 5 minutes before someone stopped to make sure I was ok.
