Parts for 26S

Post by SPC Paul »

I'm looking to replace a lot of OEM equip on my boat, mostly rigging. I need new shrouds and stays (lots of kinks in mine, and a broken strand or two), spreaders and brackets, and the bracket that attaches the forestay to the mast. MacGregorparts.com has most of the items I need, except the forestay bracket. The question is, is it worth even trying to get parts from macgregorparts.com? I've heard a lot of horror stories on this board about dealing with them. Anyone have any positive experiences with these people?

Also, I once found a company that makes a direct replacement rudder for the 26S. It ran about 250 bucks or so and corrected most of the excessive weather helm and control issues of the factory rudder. However, a google search hasn't pulled up anything about it. Anyone know the website?

Any of the shrouds, stays and generic stuff can be duplicated by a rigging shop. I've dealt with West Marine through the local store and by mail/phone and they do good work; I'm sure there are others.

You can either send them the measurements or better yet, send them the old pieces and they can duplicate them. You should be able to save a few bucks reusing the vernier shroud adjusters, etcetera as long as they're sound. Though some others on this board would recommend switching to turnbuckles, I don't; but if you want to do so, now's the time.

Regarding the Mac specific stuff, I recommend [email protected] (see above classified ad) in MI, I believe, Powersailingin OH or Blue Water Yachtsin Seattle. I've had good luck with X stuff; S stuff may be a little harder to come by though I believe most of the S/X rigging is identical.

I believe the expereience with macgregorparts.com over the past year or so has been almost universally bad. If you can't get them to answer emails or phone calls (I've tried both) you probably don't want to deal with them.
