How to bed down all manner of fittings on ur boat for 30 yrs
Check out this link. This guy has convinced me that the good old butyl tape and countersinking method is the right way to do it.

Terrific link Q1!
I'm really glad I read about staying away from silicone sealants, before I made the same mistake myself.

That's the member known as 'Maine Sail' on another sailing forum. Not sure what the etiquette is about posting links to other forums, so I won't.

IMHO , posting any useful link posted here just makes this forum more relevant. The best way to avoid steering traffic away is to make the link open a new tab or window rather than have the link change the page away from Mac Sailors. I think that is accomplished using the URL link at the top of the edit box rather than just paste into the post.
Example using URL tab: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebe ... are&page=3
without: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebe ... are&page=3 Notice how you are taken away from the site with the second link but only open a new tab with the first.
I am a member of the Macgregor Facebook group and it's not comparable - but fun just the same. Not saying improvements can't be made here like a better way to put up picture or comments/question on the Mac Mods but something about the simplicity is refreshing. I think the Macgregor Sailors Forum has critical mass of such a wealth of info that it would be very unlikely to loose it's throne.

When I was with Lotus Cars, Ltd., we used butyl tape to install the windscreens (windshields for you US guys!) because the windscreen on those cars was intended to be a structural part of the car. Worked very well, but *only* if the parts in question were spotlessly clean. Any amount of dust or grit and that sucker would leak like a sieve.

So what I am understanding from this thread is that butyl tape that used to be manufactured and sold many years ago is most likely different from the cheap knock-off stuff that is being marketed as butyl tape nowadays.
I guess that is a good reason why we share WHO we buy from, or WHERE we buy from.

I used it when I Installed portlights on my
& also on my front hatch on my
as Ken said though must be sqeaky clean surfaces but thats the case for most anything that has to be watertight to have a lasting seal
I used black tape on this project

Once u tighten down ur project because it is not a liquid any excess stays where u need it like on curvitures
J
PS 4 times the price @ marina's 4 times cheaper @ most RV Outlets

Watchout--Skin oil and sweat are contaminants for butyl tape, and if you get enough of it on as you're bedding, you may see these same leaks. Wash your hands before installing or consider latex, butyl, or nitrile gloves if you're doing a lot of bedding.kmclemore wrote:When I was with Lotus Cars, Ltd., we used butyl tape to install the windscreens (windshields for you US guys!) because the windscreen on those cars was intended to be a structural part of the car. When comtemplating rebedding the large front ports of my H340, Hunter (as well as just about everyone on the innerweb) warned that both surfaces had to be cleaned meticulously with the appropriate solvent or leaks were sure to result. The sealant Hunter used was actually a structural adhesive used in curtain wall panel assembly, as in high-rise construction. I still have most of a case of it, as well as the solvent - I may try it for rebedding the lexan on mykmclemore wrote:Worked very well, but *only* if the parts in question were spotlessly clean. Butyl Tape appears to be the same bedding tape used by HVAC guys for EVER? Found at many big box stores now.. and never gets hard?
Very Economical... I admit I never thought of using it on a boat..

Indeed... I should have mentioned grease and oils as well. We used to clean the apertures with MEK and if I recall we even used a black butyl tape 'primer' on both the aperture and the windscreen before sticking it down. I suspect it was similar to this stuff:mastreb wrote:Watchout--Skin oil and sweat are contaminants for butyl tape, and if you get enough of it on as you're bedding, you may see these same leaks.
