wheel in a Macgregor 26D
Has anyone put a wheel in their Macgregor ..... i own a 1989 Mac 26D and was seriously thinking about putting a wheel in it ... we mostly cruise and it would be a great plus from the comfort part.

26 D with Wheel Steering
I helped a fellow step his mast at Lake Mead in April of 2004. He was from AZ and had come to try out his new wheel steering he had just installed. I invited him to race with us and it looked like he started the race then went on his own or had problems. Don't remember the name of the boat or owner.
I know of one -- a couple in Vermont have documented a 26D wheel conversion quite well on their web site. They went with an Edson package, so I would guess there's a spec on file for it already. Looks like it came out very nicely.
We just converted our
to a wheel, though we used an approach modeled on the new 26's instead of the Edson stuff. You can see the full details here and on my site. It's a pretty big project, but seems worth it if your requirements are right. Incidentally, I would think the Classic 26's could get by with a single steering cable, which would really simplify things versus the dual cable setup I used.

I installed a backup inside steering wheel on my X. It really was not that difficult. It is posted in the mods section.
Just bought a Safe-T helm and cable combo, a wheel, and a piece of plywood to mouny the helm on. You also need a splashwell tube that anchors the cable sheath to the spashwell, where the cable penetrates the well. Then you just need a place to attach the push-pull rod to the motor or rudder yoke and you are all set.
