easier pin'ing of the furler forestay (26X)

X with bow roller/cdi furler

my forestay needed to be tighter on the water, but when shortened, no way could I pin it on my own even with the removal of the backstay. in the end, I found I could tie off a rope to the front mast support brarcket, run it around the bow roller to a loop formed around the cdi furler drum and back around the roller, cleated off. . This pulls it to the coorect height but an inch or so out of line, but its easy to push the drum so the holes line up so slips in with one finger.

I will finda small ratchet strap to do a similer job.

I use the trailer winch webbing run up and over the bow roller, does the same job.. Needless to say I have a second line attaching the boat to the trailer (I never depend on just the winch to hold the boat on the trailer).

Mike Inmon suggests using a dockline tied above the furler down to the trailer, and then putting your foot through the eye to pull the furler down to the tang. This leaves both hands free to pin it.

That foot trick is magical. Two hands make pinning the furler a cinch.....

I have tried this, and found that my 110Kgs is just not enough, The winch is a cinch though!!

Tie around the furler, through the anchor roller and back up (most people can pull it down and get another to pin) or if you have a long enough line back to one of your winches for a little extra pull. This can be done off the trailer, which after many times of setting up on the trailer, I am consistently leaning towards on the water setup.

this was more about being on the water rather than on the hard. Many times I had to pin after going through brigdes where I was, and now permantely in a slip. so worth mentioning for those that struggle on the water. makes life a lot easier/rig tensioned.

@133bhp: I don't understand, if this is about re-pinning the forestay on the water, then why do you mention the "bow roller" in your original post? The only bow roller I know of is on the trailer? Please enlighten me ... you got me curious ... LOL.

I haven't seen that one used before. Are you using it with a furler? I'm having a hard time visualizing how....



...it would work with the furler drum. Is there much leverage with it and is the rig tight or do you still turn the turnbuckle?

Defender doesn't stock it but will order it. Both the 205 and 210 give you a lot of leverage and it is easy to pin and still get a lot of tension on the rig. More than you can get just pulling down. Before when I would pull the mast up with the gin pole and block and tackle I would still turn the turnbuckle after pinning. It wasn't that hard to do with the hank-on sail but would be real hard to do with the furler drum. Now I don't have to do that ,

Smorgasbord business model. Macs in slips wouldn't benefit while trailer sailors obviously would benefit.
