Rub Rail Replacement

The previous owner of my 2010 26M must have failed to use proper bumpers and actually used the rub rails while slipped for a couple years. When I got the boat the rub rails were worn thin and had split in several places on both sides. I purchased a new rub rail from BWY, but the replacement is vinyl and not very thick. I will be replacing it as soon as the weather warms up a bit. I am thinking of adding 1" wide double stick 3M body molding tape to add a little more cushioning effect. Any comments or suggestions?

I use gorillia tape on a spot on my port side - pending rub rail replacement. Works well.

I also used heavy duct tape to get me through last season. It held up quite well but looks tacky. I am still awaiting feed back on the use of double stick body molding tape under the new rub rail.

The rub rail we purchase comes directly from the source that both MacGregor and Tattoo Yachts used. We asked for the exact rub rail, it should be the same. It better be the same as I have about 500 boxes of the stuff! I will go out to our warehouse and open a new box just to be sure, but it should be the same thing as a new boat would have had. Cheryl

Just opened a new box of rub rail, yes it is the same as we have always sold and the same that both MacGregor Yachts and Tattoo Yachts sold. It is very rubbery not plastic or vinyl at all. I am sorry that you think it is inferior but it is the same. Cheryl

When you get the old rub rail off you will see that it is the same. If you try to add thickness under it for cushioning you will have difficulties keeping the rub rail on the boat as it will not fit right and the 3M5200 sealant won't have the chance to seal it on the boat. Rub rail is intended to lightly protect the boat, never intended to be a cushion. Fenders are the cushion. Many other brands of boats do not even have a rub rail as the MacGregor boats do, many have an aluminum rail only. Using fenders on both sides, at least 3, will do the trick when docking. Be sure to place the fenders at the correct height so that they hit the dock. Many boats that are moored for the season do not have the proper size fenders, fenders at the correct height, or poorly tied on or not inflated properly. This is why we see so many people needing new rub rail. To keep rub rail nice it is all about fenders!

The rub rail you got is absolutely identical in every way to what was on the boat from the factory. It seems softer for 2 reasons. 1) It isn't stretched tight like it is after installation 2) The old rub rail gets somewhat harder as it ages in the sun. There is only one source for this product in the world, it is made using a custom extrusion die that MacGregor had made in 1992 when they began using this style of rub rail, we now have it made by the same manufacturer from that same die, it is also the exact material that the original was. Unfortunately we have to buy it 10,000' at a time, but that's why it is so reasonably priced.

We have 26X Anchor rollers, 26M Anchor rollers, and new longer 26M Anchor rollers to better fit plow anchors. And, yes we have enough rub rail that I may have to put them in my will....so please buy rub rail!

Recently replaced the rub rail and did find that the replacement that I got from BWY was an exact replacement. Quite a job that took two days, but I am happy with the results. Should last me many years as I will use my bumpers when docking.

I buy stuff from BWY because the stuff they have is the exact as the stuff from the factory. I already have a helm seat in nice dry storage in the attic, I have some fittings, and a few other things. I did not know that they had some rub rail so I might get some for storage too - (although 'boat's rub rail still looks like new and the thought of replacing it sounds like a major pain).

I wonder if BWY has any of that fake wood stuff that they used in the MAC's? (Probably not).

I think the next thing I will be buying is a spare dagger board.
