I have narrowed my choice for our new chart plotter down to one of two Lowrance models due to our good experiences with the brand. FYI, I am looking at the Elite 4 or 5 depending on the location of the mounting. The new model is called the Hook 4 or 5, same unit.
For those of us with out a pedestal, where have you mounted your chart plotters?
If I mount to the cabin wall, or inside with a swing out like "Flyboy"; which I really like the mount he built, is a 5 inch screen large enough to see from the tiller? My 1st thought is to go with the 4, and mount it to the tiller so it is easy to see and easy to operate.
Thanks for the thoughts let them flow!
Chart Plotter mounting location
Re: Chart Plotter mounting location
I decided to do flush mount ether side of the cockpit. The chartploter Garmin 7607 is on the right and the GMI20 and AP24 is on the left. Both screens are readable from ether side of the cockpit while sailing. I had to do a little fiberglass work on the lower right corner to get the 7607 to fit.

Re: Chart Plotter mounting location
Personally I like it close to the tiller so that it is easy to see and to operate if needed. The boat came with a depth finder only in the bulkhead by the companionway and it was hard to see from the tiller especially in some light conditions.

It has worked great on the life-line like shown above. When there were two of us on the boat I might have it slid forward to where I could see it while managing the sails and at other times, especially when anchoring kwhen depth reading are important it would be slid back to where Ruth could see it and let me know depths as I was forward with the anchor gear.

Since the last trip I've bought the Standard Horizon CPN 700i shown above and will use it on both boats. On the Mac I'll make a new life-line mount that it will be on along with a depth finder. On the Endeavour it mounts at the wheel.
More on the life-line mount here....

Re: Chart Plotter mounting location
Thanks, I like the adjustability you built in. I have a steel sleeve in the tiller handle on the end the PO installed for something to mount on the tiller. I was thinking the Elite 4 would work good there, and only be a few inches from my hand so it would be easy to use, and see while steering, and since I added the link to the outboard I always steer from the tiller. Cabling would also be easy as I already have 12 volts in the locker. Thanks for the thoughtsSumner wrote:Personally I like it close to the tiller so that it is easy to see and to operate if needed. Re: Chart Plotter mounting location
With most modern chartplotters made today they have their own wifi network that allows you to see and control whatever is on the chartplotter from any iphone or ipad. I have the chartplotter on the helm like most people but the thing could just as well be in the head for all I know because I mostly run the chartplotter from my phone. With today's modern plotters you can mount it anywhere. (Speaking of the head, I don't need to look up to see which way the boat it going whilst I take a dump - I just look at the chartplotter from my iphone!
)
Hows that for an image for ya?

I prefer to leave my phone below so I don't hear the work calls! It is something to consider next time I'm in the head!
