Re: Batteries
I use one group 24 marine battery. It's all I need. All my nav lights and interior lights are LEDs, so I don't need much. I do use it for my electric start outboard, VHF radio and once in awhile for the auto pilot. Your needs may vary. Find out how many amp hours you require and size your battery bank accordingly.

Re: Batteries
I decided after a couple of sailing days that did not turn into sailing days because of dead batteries to go the Optima route. They are pricey, I admit, but I have found them very reliable, and they last a long time. I keep my boat at a marina slip, and I do not have to pay for shore power to maintain my batteries (I do have a charger/maintainer hooked into the system). If I get out once a month, the engine use to get out of the slip and to drain my ballast water is enough to recharge any loss due to starting or use. I think I am on my fourth year with this set. I have a starting and a house battery, but I usually use them together unless anchored and using house current mostly. I have a combination of LED running/anchor lights, incandescent cabin lights, VHF radio, AM/FM, electric marine toilet, water pump, and GPS/instruments. I really enjoy peace of mind with the Optimas. That is worth the extra coast to me. Plus there is no maintenance; no acid to fret about.

Re: Batteries
The minimalist approach to batteries is one Group 24, and a jump pack that you carry to the boat and bring home once a month to top off charge in case you run the Group 24 out.
In winter, the jump pack goes to a car.
