R&R spreader and shrouds LD towing tips

Post by Hugh »

We're heading out on a road trip next week with Cedar Wind :macm: . 2000 km across the Canadian prairies .

Tips:for R&R the spreader and shrouds?
I've never taken them off but assume it's pretty straight forward. ?????
- for towing long distances ?
- mast support?

Here's what mine looks like, dressed for a long ride.

Spreaders off and stored below. Dock line to stabilize the mast side-to-side. Mast crutch at tabernacle to take the bounce out. And forestay and furler disconnected from the mast hound and slid back so the furler drum shank rests on the pulpit. Lots and lots of ball-end bungies from Walmart. No canvas, which is folded and stored below. MRS left in place and attached, since I'm going to use it at the other end anyway. Strap over the stern (state law in many/most states), and other stern dock line around rudders for extra security. OB tilted up all the way, with lock flipped down for backup, but still sitting on hydraulics. All lines and stays tied up to the mast with the same ball-end bungies. Bow of the boat snugged into the rubber vee-cushion at the winch. That's about it.

Oh, and I have an extra set of lights on the OB lower unit, so my brake lights are in the face of anyone too close, or too high (trucks, RVs; not heads, I hope) to see the standard lights which are way under the boat. Also gives me side markers at the back, instead of the single red light MacGregor says you should hang from the mast.

more or less the same, I never have removed spreaders but might do it next time, chuck them in the cabin,
remove, chuck the rear stay in the cabin.
go careful or remove the top furler mount before sliding it, most failures are through bending there IMO
the mast crutch needs to be fixed/bolted to the base plate and mast, else will bounce free.
I use those bar wraparound led bike lights on the guide posts, red and white, rear and forward facing. helps other judge length at night

Hopefully someone with a :macm: can respond, but here's my experience with my :macx: . I unhooked my spreaders from the mast and bungied them to the mast. I use these bungies from Blue Water Yachts http://bwyachts.com/web%20catalog%20312 ... nch_it.htm They're better then regular bungies, because they don't have the sharp hook and better then the ball bungies, because you can adjust to any length. You don't want anything flapping in the wind, so get about twice as many bungies as you think you'll need. I borrowed a furler support idea from a mod like this one http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/in ... ?view=1841 Mines not as nice, but it worked on the one long trip we've take so far. You can see it in the photo below.

I recommend stopping within the first 20-30 minutes to check everything and to do a complete walk around every time you stop.
