Running outboard when heeled over
We were returning from Rottnest island to the port of Fremantle a few days ago. Wind and sea conditions were such that with jib alone we were averaging 20 degree of heel with as much us 40 degrees in the odd gust. This configuration was giving us around 4 knots SOG. I found by running the engine at a little below 2,000 RPM it greatly improved the handling and I was able to maintain around 5 knots in 1.5 to 2 meter swells. So effectively we were motor sailing. The motor sounded just fine but it occurred to me that it is not its usual angle of prolonged operation for an evinrude e-tec 50hp. A ski boat I guess will have centrifugal forces keeping lubricants in place as it steers hard to port or Starboard for short durations. Any views on running an outboard while heeled over?

E-tec is a direct injected 2 stroke it don't care...
A four stroke with a crankcase then I suppose the oil pickup for the oil pump could end up running dry at certain angles but this could be fixed by multiple pickups in the sump so it can pick up at any angle

Thanks for input Kadet. I could find heaps of info on tilt angle online but nothing substantial on motoring heeled over.

Did that lots with the Mac very effective way to travel. Any newer 4 stroke will let you know if the oil or oil pressure is low or drops. It is near impossible to kill these new engines. Reduce your headsail a bit say 25% or until optimized (if on a furler) you'll heel less and gain more speed. Should settle in around 15 degrees and 5.5 - 6.5 knts
