Trailer Sailing anyone?

One of the best attributes of the Mac is the ability to explore other states and bodies of water. How far do you typically travel from home for your vacation? We find ourselves going all over the West. Even Idaho has a couple of lakes worthy of a sailing destination. I've finally got some photo's posted if anyone is curious about what sailing is like from land-locked Idaho.

Cliff,
Tow that sucker SouthWest to Oxnard, CA and we will hit the Channel Islands!

Not having a tow vehicle limits my boat travel, but I do hope to fix that soon.

This year I went from

Toronto in The Great White North of Polite People

Baltimore Inner Harbor

Barnstable Harbor and Cape Cod Bay

Woods Hole Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket, Cuttyhunk

Narragansett Bay Rhode Island

Working full time, I managed to wrap about half the trips into business travel ...company was happy as I didnt have hotel bills...

I was sitting pretty...

Hey Rich... I we may just take ya up on that! The Channel Islands would be a first for us. What's the best time of year for that trip?

By the way, does anybody know of any good trailering destinations in SW Canada (fresh water) ? We travel with 2 dogs - is this a problem traveling into Canada?

Thanx for posting the great pic's.

My wife and I live just a few miles from lake mead and we are getting our new mac on the 25 of this month. I have just started to look for other places to tow out to and spend some time.

We moved from southern california and I used to sail out of newport beach and out to catilina, now we are land locked. Lake mead is a big lake but it will be nice to get out to new spots.

Please let us know how your trips turn out. It could save us a wasted trip to a poor location.

Cliff,

The best time of year would be fall and spring. Summer can be bad due to fog, and there are weeks that you don't see the sun. Winter, well it would be a bummer if you towed down to Ca and then had a week of storms. But the fall and spring are the best time, so make the plans and come on out.

I actually bet that if you were to tow out, there would be plenty of Ca Mac'ers that would be willing to head out with us, as everyone is always looking for an excuse to go sailing....as if you need one.

I've been to Canada several times with our dogs. They need to see vacination paperwork. Rabies shots must be current. They might ask you a few questions about the dogs (Are you selling/leaving them in Canada?). Typically if you have the paperwork ready for them when you hand them your passport (or proof of citizenship) it has been a non issue for us.

Since I live in SW Canada (Greater Vancouver) I can suggest a few places. If you are looking at the Fraser Valley area, Harrisson Lake readily comes to mind, lots of wind and a few Macs aready there. If your view of SW Canada is larger then the entire southern half of British Columbia comes to mind with the Okanagan being most prominent. The Okanagan Valley has large lakes and great sailing in the summer months. Shuswap Lakes are nice, primarily houseboats though and winds are not always guarranteed, still a great location as they are very large lakes. Many other lakes abound but the ones I mentioned are most popular. If you make it to the coast forget the lakes and head for the ocean, the San Juans and Gulf Islands offer some of the worlds finest sailing, just be aware we are governed by seasons.

This spring might work out very well for us to sail to the Channel Islands. We'll have to touch base early next year.

Canada is sooo on our list - did a motorcycle trip with the boys about 10 years ago to Lake Louise and up to Jasper. Jaw dropping beauty. Stephanie's not seen it. I'll look up the places you mentioned.

International travellers - remember to do your paperwork/videophone on both ends of your trip...its a brave new world out there.

Here in upstate NY they watch us on radar now, as we come back from Toronto, then come out to greet us sometimes
