Advice Wanted for Sailing in Australia

Post by deacm »

I notice alot of Aussie contributors on this board so I thought I'd ask you for some advice. I am coming to Australia for 2 weeks in February. I plan to make sailing a good part of my time there. I will be in Sydney visiting friends for about 5 days and would love to sail the Sydney Harbor for a few of our days there. Any advice as to where to charter a boat there? Friendly Yacht clubs? etc etc. After making the obligatory pilgrimage to Ayers Rock, we plan to end up chartering a sailboat up in the Whitsundays area. Again, any advice for a 4-5 day itineary up there or good charter companies? Will it be too hot that time of year to charter ? Should we just hunker down then in an air conditioned hotel in Cairns? :-) Any advice would be greatly appreciated as our friens in Sydney are not sailors so they can't give us much advice. Thanks in advance.

Visiting Australia

Hi,
Send me an email to [email protected] and I will see what I can do to arrange something for Sydney Harbour. I am the MacGregor dealer for Australia and I am sure as a group the Aussie Mac owners will do whatever we can to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Sydney Harbour is beautiful but can be very busy. You also have to watch for gusty southerly changes in summer that can suddenly appear. Winds can reach 30 knots plus quite quickly and the temperature can fall 10 or more degrees in an hour.

Cairns at that time of year is very hot and sticky - Cyclone/Monsoon season. Get ready for a dunking. I understand that swimming in the sea is not advised because of stingers and a few other nasties at this time of the year. Are you sure you want to go to Cairns? Hobart in Tasmania is nice, so is Melbourne, Adelaide and lots of other places.

Cheers for now,

Phil King
