Little Harbor, Catalina

Post by Skip Matthies »

On the far side of Catalina, about 5 miles past Cat Harbor, is Little Harbor. It is a fairly well protected cove from the swells by a rock shoal passable on the starboard approach side. Each year our the Arrowhead Sail & Power Squadron ventures over for a weekend. This year it is August 12 & 13th.
We met several Mac owners last year at the Fall Mead Maddness gathering. So I thought I'd extend an invitation to this gathering.
We bring something to burn on the Bar B Que Saturday night and a dish to share. Some will hike to a stream and grotto we know of, snorkle or go find Buffalo. They tend to hang around the campground that is there with running water, porta pottys and kyak rentals. No restaurant or gas or dock. A dink is needed. You don't want to beach the Mac with the surg from whats left of the swells. Two anchors are also needed.
One old salt has some games planned along with a Blind Rower Dink Race that has a rower with a bucket over his head and usually a wife giving direction. Great fun. Let know if your interested.

Skip how many boats do you have going? What day and where do you leave from? I keep my boat at Marina Del Rey maste up storage. And, I have not been to Catalina yet this Summer. It sounds like a well organized trip. I hope all goes well, and if I make it over there I,ll look you guys up. Good sailing Phil :macm:

Great info about Little Harbor. I will definitely check this out when able. Thanks for the invite - alas, we'll be in Maui.

Your profile & data are blank. Are you local? Would you be able to make the MDR BBQ August 26th?

I think I can make it

Post by mermaelee »

My nephew and his girlfriend are visiting from Illinois and I think they and my wife and I could be there on that weekend. I do love little harbor except for the time when I got beached there because I anchored too shallow and early morning tides and surges slowly bumped me onto the beach. I will make sure to anchor at least 50 yards from the beach this time. I don't know what stream you are talking about but I know the resevoir where the buffalo are. It might be too hot to hike. The snorkeling is great there and if you find the buffalo chips, they make good fuel for the fire. I plan to go to Emerald Bay and Avalon and Little Harbor from Aug. 10 to the 14th. There is good cliff diving at Emerald Bay. I would love to finally meet some other mac people. We could divy up the firewood, etc. to bring.
Tentatively count me in!

Mark,
I've been a member here since 2000 under "McSkipper." I forgot my password and changed ISP providers in the meantime and had to start again. I will get around to putting in the info one of these days.

Mermaelee,
I think you may be confusing Little Harbor with the Ismus or Two Harbors. Ltl Harbor is on the west side south of two harbors.

I will put in thursday nite and leave at dawn from Long Beach by the Queen or from 26th St., Davies Landing. I know of eight others boats going, 5 sail, 3 stinkpotters as we affectionitly call them. Possibly two other macs that are in our squadron.

A trusted sailor told me to "sail the wind" over and not the rumb line. He meant that if you point so as to keep the sails full w/o pinching, the wind shifts enough that you would wind up at the Ismus from Long Beach. I do plan to sail back, but depending on sea conditions and how much of a rush I am to get there, I might try some sailing on way over.

Thanks for the invite on the 26th Mark. We have our annual Power Squadron Bar B Que at the Ismus that weekend. Hopefully we'll meet Schooner or later. (bad, overused :( )
