ST 4000 Autopilot 'switch' while sailing vs motoring

Post by deacm »

Does anyone have any knowledge whether the ST 4000 computer must run different 'software' to handle sailing vs motoring (as those two conditions, I've been told, would require two different ways to handle the boats steering). If so, is there a software 'switch' within the 4000 that you can switch between 'power' and 'sail' modes? Thanks

I've read through the manual, and I don't believe there's anything in there about a power vs. sail setting. There are several parameters that can be adjusted to tailor the AP to the boat, and perhaps these could be changed to deliver optimum performance depending on whether you were sailing or motoring.

no switch. my old autohelm 4000 works well under sail and motor. i do not change the rudder response sensitivity. but i rarely motor fast with rudders up and without ballast.

I agree. It doesn't know the difference.
