Repower with E-Tec from Merc.??
Repower with E-Tec from Merc.??
I am planning to repower my 2000x from a merc.Bigfoot 50 to the evinrude e-tec 60. Does anyone know if there will be any modifications necessary? The work will be done in mexico and i would like to be aware of any changes with the new shifter cables or steering gear. Has anyone done this? Too many problems with the bigfoot....

Well the wireing harness will have to be changed and the key dead man switch tack and things like that will also need a change. The cables would depend on the type of shifter you have. If you have the teleflex like I do
you might be able to use it and the cables. You probably have the merc. adapter on the engine side of the cables you can take off and use the cables direct.
other then that you might have to fill and cover the engine mounting holes before you install the new engine. If I was doing this I would take the op. to beef up the transom some even though you dont need to. Say a piece of marine plywood inside against the transom you can bolt through. with your new engine.
Make sure that you get the install manual from evinrude that comes with the engine. you will need the wire specs to hook up your power trim wires to the teleflex shifter amoung other things.

Spend the time with the dealer/installer to make sure that they fit the controller properly. Pay special attention to where they are going to run the cables in the cockpit and into the control pedastal.
Make sure they fit them into the post using something to prevent rubbing and seal the hole (search my old post for the full story).
Good Luck

Thanks for all the info.
The install will be done by the Mexican Evinrude dealer for 6250, tax?
I hope to be there to super., there is a backing plate that may have to be redrilled or changed.
I hope the cables can be used from the old shifter or are provided.
The hookup for the steering rods I hope are the same.
The noise factor I don't think will be a big deal, reliability is my concern.
The prop size will be another factor I will have to deal with, torque, not speed is what I want.
I sure hope the time and money for the new motor will lower the stress the old one put me through....
