topping lift

Post by mrbpj »

As a new owner of a second hand 26M I have a question about rigging a topping lift. This may have been covered before, but I didn't find it.
It seems that the boom is only held up by the mainsail. Or am I missing something very obvious?

Thanks for replying. I agree they are simple once installed.

Has anyone tried a boomkicker?

I have a boom kicker and Love it.

Once you get the tension right you never have to use a boom crutch. Just drop the sail and sheet the boom.

Thanks, Scott.
The boomkicker looks like a much better solution.
I've ordered one from HK Innovations (Online Catalog).

What all is involved with getting the tension correct/right?

Too bad ... it's available right here in Heath's on-line catalog @ $172.

EditoAdd: Moe ... Oops! I found a UK website, also called HKi, but it was so infuriating to navigate that I gave up. Glad I was wrong ~~!

Frank, HK Innovations IS Heath's website.

Edit: Look at the copyright at the bottom of all the MacGregorSailors web pages. Also, when you use the donate button or online catalog here, the charge is from HK Innovations.

It comes with 2 different thickness of rods. (OR 3) I dont remember.

Deciding which one you want to use is all there is to it.

The stiffer ones hold the boom better but the light ones are easier to trim with. Only Problem with the light one is you cant use the boom as a handrail when coming down off the deck into the cockpit.

We tried all of them and now use the lighter ones.
