The Agony, the pain, the horror of it all...

Here are my two alternatives for the drain. The first, a three inch drum trap. Open up the three inch bell several thousandths, to fit the drain fitting large OD, then glue it up. I would have to put a notch in the drawer back to clear the cleanout plug. $15 (not counting labor). Apparently, when I retired, I became worthless. :D

Or, a 2" cap opened up a few thousandths to fit the smaller drain fitting OD. Bore a hole for the nipple, and JB weld the nipple into the hole. No drawer modification required. Less than $2, unless you count labor :| . Note: spade bit is NOT the best tool for drilling pvc... it was the correct size, but buggered up the hole pretty bad. Did it late last night when I was tired. Should have used a regular drill bit and dremeled the rest (didn't have a 7/8" drill that would fit in my drill press). Well, got plenty of JB weld... :)

After getting the drain fitting squared away, I decided to cut some of the inner panels. Got the first layer of the countertop cut, the stove bay sides, and the trash bay floor. Did the back panel the other day. I'll get the bottom panel tomorrow, then I'll have to get the "good" plywood for the front and sides. That means I'll need to make a decision on what the finish is going to look like. That may slow me down a bit. :?

Keep an eye on that JB Weld stuff - I have had bad luck with leaks using JB Weld because of tiny fractures along the seam weld. Might be a good idea to put a good layer of 5200 on the INSIDE where those two fittings meet. 5200 will seal up ANYTHING.

You are exactly right. I remembered it wasn't that slick on pvc right as I smeared the last glob on. :( Maybe I can just peel the epoxy off and replace it with 5200.

I may make another one and use pvc glue - which is what I intended to do until I had drill meltdown. I plan to use a removable adhesive at the drain so I can get it apart without replacing the drain.

Actually, I'm just glad I have a way to mate the sink drain to the factory flex hose that fits in the design, so even making another one doesn't bother me. 8)

Put the 4th galley slide in (thanks BWYACHTS), and got the base plate made and slides located. K9Kampers will get a chuckle at me going in and out of the boat several times while finalizing the slide positions on the base plate. I keep wanting to get the same range of motion with a galley that's a foot longer... ain't happening. :) But, I'm happy with what I came up with. After getting the base plate drilled, I put it back in the boat and slid it forward and aft to check for surprises. The hull does start turning in at the forward end of the range. It gets pretty close, but does clear.

So, how many clamps do you need to build a new galley? At least one more than you have. :P I was resorting to visegrips and C-clamps by the time I put the last panel in. I have some old-school carpenter clamps, but they are so bulky and heavy, it's not worth it on a small piece like this.

At the end of the day, the bottom plate is on; the trash bay floor is in, and the stove bay sides and floor are in. The back is ready to go on, but there are too many clamps in the way to put it on.

Image

Ordered a brushed nickel cold water faucet today. We'll see if it's worth installing. I don't plan on having hot water at the galley at this time.

Had to cut grass this morning, so production was down and perspiration was up.

Gathered materials after lunch as best I could. The sky was black, but for the occasional lightning bolt, as I entered Lowes. So, I decided not to buy the hardwood plywood for the sides that show. Got the trash can and modified it like I planned. Wanted to get the trash can in place to work the front tilt-out storage, and the trash can removal door around it.

Image

Got a brushed nickel piano hinge for my stove cover. It's 30", but will need to be cut to around 21". The back panel is fitted, but won't be secured until I'm through with everything else. I planed the rear frames to get them to mate up good with the plywood. It will be a challenge to clamp, glue and screw.

Image

The Admiral helped me veneer the first drawer edges before she took her evening class. Something about not wanting me using her good iron to hot glue wood projects... :? Anyway, I'm using the pre-glued white birch veneer to dress up the top edge of the drawer boxes. I've never used it before, but it works well - particularly with two sets of hands. Will get the other drawers done in the next day or so.

Image

Image

Veneer station in laundry room. Edge veneer comes in a roll with hot glue pre-applied to one side...

Image

I also bought hinges for the tilt-out storage in the trash bay (galley face to right of stove bay on top), and the trash can removal door (will be on the forward galley face).

Still puzzling over latches and pulls. If anybody has found a set of robust latches that look good, and won't have to be financed, let me know. Right now, I'm leaning toward building my own latches... :P

Decided to go with birch plywood for the skin. Going to take a shot at doing a flush front. Got the front roughed in. I've got a bit of fine tuning to do before I can mount it.

Decided to delete the tilt-out panel in front of the sink. There won't be room for enough storage to make it worthwhile.

Today is fine tuning day... I had to plunge cut the drawer holes with a small circular saw and finish the corners with a jig saw. This leaves openings that are roughly to size and (with luck) not out of square by more than 1/8" on any side. To inset the drawer and door faces, I needed to improve on the hole tolerances a tad.

Where the hardware wasn't in the way, AND I had framing behind the face to trace, I could use a flush trimming bit in my router. At 1/2" diameter, it just leaves the corners to square up; which I did with my oscillating tool.

Image

When you're using your framing as your pattern match for your router, you need to look carefully for imperfections. Otherwise, you might see the bit wander and say WTF? (which we all know means Wow, That's Fantastic) :(

Image

Before lunch, got the face pretty well wrapped except for sanding. I may get the face on it today.

Image

I don't have dust collection for hand routing, so I have a little cleanup to do after lunch. The router cut a lot of time and thinking out of squaring up the holes, but it makes a mess. :D

Got the face on, but the clamps are in the way of further big progress. So, I squared up all of the cutouts on the table saw in preparation for making drawer fronts and doors; and picked up some of the 4,000 tools that escaped from my shelves when I wasn't looking. I'm planning on adding a contrasting wood strip around the drawer fronts and doors; similar to what BOAT did on his table in Herschel's "more seating" thread. I built one of my daughters a bedside table like that - light wood with mahogany trim and I liked the way it came out. Seeing BOAT's table reminded me of it. Of course, I'm not sure I can live up to BOAT's table.

Image

My cold-water only faucet showed up today, which is timely. Tomorrow, I should be working out the top details. The finish stated brushed nickel, and it's something in that range, closer to polished than brushed. Looks ok with the sink and soap dispenser. Valve handle seems counter intuitive, down (perpendicular) for on, parallel to the line for off, but otherwise it seems ok.

did you get your latches sorted out.?
i like the lift and pull system that works on many larger sailing vessels, and doesnt cost much! :)
wont stop the drawers coming out in a knock down, but i think you may have bigger problems to deal with in said event, than worrying about the drawers, and yer knickers lying everywhere :D :D

Nope, still mulling latches... Is the lift and pull anything like the bend and snap? (Legally Blonde). I'm not familiar wth the lift and pull, unless you are talking about the round bodied with the pull out handle.

Image

A tad pricey if this is what you mean. But, very nice looking and robust. I've got a few more days to decide before latches are on the critical path.
